Pendant Lights: How to Choose, Hang & Style Them Perfectly

Why Pendant Lights Are the Most Versatile Fixture in Your Home
No other lighting fixture offers the combination of function, drama, and design flexibility that a pendant light does. Hung at the right height, in the right location, a pendant light becomes the focal point of an entire room — drawing the eye upward and anchoring the space with intention and style.
Where to Use Pendant Lights
- Kitchen island — The most popular location. Pendants over an island provide task lighting while making a strong design statement
- Dining table — A pendant or cluster of pendants above the dining table creates an intimate, restaurant-quality atmosphere
- Entryway & foyer — A statement pendant in the entrance sets the tone for your entire home
- Bedroom — Bedside pendants replace table lamps, freeing up surface space while adding a sophisticated, hotel-like feel
- Living room — A large pendant above the coffee table anchors the seating area beautifully
Getting the Height Right
Height is the most critical factor in pendant light installation:
- Over a dining table — Hang 28–34 inches above the table surface. The bottom of the shade should be at eye level when seated
- Over a kitchen island — Hang 30–36 inches above the countertop
- In an entryway — Allow at least 7 feet of clearance from the floor to the bottom of the fixture
- As a bedside light — Position so the bottom of the shade is at shoulder height when sitting up in bed
Choosing the Right Size
Scale matters enormously with pendant lights. A fixture that's too small looks lost; one that's too large overwhelms the space.
- For a dining table, choose a pendant that's about half the width of the table
- For a kitchen island, use multiple smaller pendants spaced 24–30 inches apart rather than one large fixture
- For an entryway, go bold — a statement piece works better than something understated
Matching Style to Your Interior
- Modern & minimalist — Geometric shapes, matte black or brushed nickel, clean lines
- Industrial — Cage pendants, exposed Edison bulbs, dark metal finishes
- Scandinavian — Simple forms, white or natural materials, understated elegance
- Luxe & glamorous — Glass globes, brass or gold finishes, sculptural forms
Cluster Arrangements
One of the most dramatic pendant lighting techniques is the cluster — grouping multiple pendants at varying heights to create a sculptural installation. This works beautifully in double-height spaces, over large dining tables, and in grand entryways.
